The Lions Club

Lions Clubs International is the world's largest service club organization with 1.3 million members in approximately 45,000 in 200 countries and geographical areas.

Lions are men and women who volunteer their time in humanitarian causes.  Founded in 1917, the volunteer organization's motto is "We Serve."  They conduct vision and health screening, build parks, support eye hospitals, assist youth award scholarships, provide help in time of disaster and so much more.

Worldwide Lions Clubs are recognized for their service to the blind and visually impaired.  This service began when Helen Keller challenged Lions to become "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness" during the 1925 Lions Club International Convention.  (Read the full Helen Keller speech HERE).

The Crown Point Lions Club has been meeting the needs of the Crown Point community since 1943.

$1.00 from each ticket sold during The Miracle Worker will go towards Crown Point KidSight Program, vision screening.  It is important to screen the eyes of the young, since the optic nerve and area of the brain that gives us vision are completely developed by the age of six.  Vision deficiencies that may have occurred during development will be very difficult or impossible to treat after the age of six when development has completed.  If problems are caught early enough, they can be completely corrected; and the earlier they are diagnosed, the better the chances of correction and the easier and less expensive the treatment.

The Crown Point Lions Club has screened the eyes of many of the young children in Crown Point.  We schedule vision screening with the local Day Care Center, Pres-schools and Head Start Programs.  This service, which costs our club $5.00 per child, is FREE to the children w screen.  We have screened all the kindergarten children entering the Crown Point Community School Corporation the past three years.  This year in April, we screened 451 children going into kindergarten.  This month we have screened 88 children the Head Start Program.

The Crown Point Lions Club runs a budget of over $20,000, and all of this money is put right back into the community.  Our fund raisers are a Steak Fry in September, Spring Bingo, Golf Outing in May and Lions Mints.  Our Fall Bingo will be November 15, 2007 at the Lake County Fairgrounds starting at 7:00 PM.  Please come and enjoy a fun filled evening.

We also collect used eye glasses and hear aids.  you will find our collection boxes in several of the banks in town, Funeral Homes, St. Anthony Hospital and the Civic Center.

Join the Crown Point Lions in making our community and the world a better place to live.  We meet the 1st and 3rd Thursday at Bronko's.  Stop in and join us anytime or call our Membership Chairperson Vicky Klein at 663-5100, President Kevin Knaga at 662-8930 or our Club Secretary Joan Sherrington at 663-6152.
